over和above都可以用来表示“高于”，相当于“higher than”。例如：
① The water came up over/above our knees.
水已涨至我们膝盖之上。
② Can you see the birds flying above/over the pear trees?
你看到那一片梨树上空飞翔的鸟吗？
▲如果要表示“覆盖”或“越过”，则用over。如：
③ There's thick cloud over the south of England.
英格兰南部地区一片乌云。
④ Electricity cables went over the fields.
电缆线越过田野。(这句也可以用across)
▲指数量时，我们一般用 over(＝more than)表示“超过”，但如果指上下垂直的度量以及海拔高度时，要用above。试比较：
⑤ You have to be over 18 to see this film.
你得超过十八岁才能看这部电影。(不用above)
⑥ The temperature is three degrees above zero.
温度在零上三度。(不用over)
⑦ The mountain is over(＝more than)4,000 metres above (higher than) sealevel.
那座山海拔有四千多米高。
▲over表示在某人或某物的正上方，反义词是under。above表示位置高于某人或某物。但不一定是正上方，反义词是below. | | |

介词above，over都有“在……上面”之意，但含意和用法有所不同。above表示在某物的上方。但不一定有“正上方”的含义；over则指在某物的正上方。例如：
A lamp hung over us . 在我们上方悬挂着一盏灯。（灯恰好在我们的正上方。）
Their classroom is above ours on the third floor .
他们的教室在我们教室的上面三（四）楼。（不一定恰好在我们教室的正上方。） |

表示一般"在上" 用above
表示比较精确地靠近地"垂直在上", 用over.
1.比如
His office is above ours on the second floor.
(他的办公室在我们的二楼).
注意, 说话的人很可能在地下一层或者二层, 只是表达, 那个人的办公室在他们的上面,不一定恰好在他们上面.
The summit of that mountain is 8800 meters above
sea-level.(那座山峰海拔8800米高).
注意,,,只是表示海拔, 不表示垂直于,,,上.
His office is right over ours.(他的办公室就在我们头上的房间). 注意,,,是垂直在上.
2. 仅仅表示上下次序用above, 有蒙起来或者遍及全面的含义时用over.
比如:
put this book above the other one.(把这本书放在那本书的上面).
spread the tablecloth over the table(把桌布铺在桌上).
The sun rose above the horizon.(太阳升到地平线上)
The sun shone over the valley.(太阳普照山谷)
